Road Trip!

We finally managed to visit dear older son this last weekend.  The drive to Arizona was uneventful – DH drove all the way, very relaxed, and nice.  Here are some photos of the terrain –  and I thought we lived in the desert:

And I had to add this photo: 20 years ago – so happy to be together then too…

Ok, back to the trip…  Gravel seems to be a big landscape feature around here:

Finally, some color… Downtown Tucson. We had a wonderful brunch at a French cafe.  Oh, and I had to take this photo of the street – I found it very interesting that we were required to park backwards.  I think it was for the safety of the bikers or something.  I’m thinking around where we live, you can get a ticket for parking backwards?

Here is DD, at a stop on the way back – she is giving me the “look” for trying to take her photo:

We stopped at Quartzite on the way home to refuel.  Since we were making good time, we decided to check out this bookstore… Word of warning, the proprietor works in the buff! I was a bit thrown off, but pretended like it was all normal :). Funny thing, he is in the buff, but all the books are wrapped in plastic so you can’t peruse them – must be to protect them from the desert dust. Tucson2013_6

And here is a funny road sign – I had to borrow this photo from the web. DH seemed to think he was back on a German Autobahn or something.  Before I could get my camera ready, we had already passed the sign:

An Outing To Palm Springs!

After finally finishing the digital graphic art barter project, and our tax info prep for our accountant, I thought we deserved a nice day outing to Palm Springs.  Had to get DD away for a bit too –  she was getting a bit antsy/nervous about college acceptances and such.  So, the three of us headed out to Palm Springs.  It was a beautiful day filled with antiquing, thrifting, walking around downtown, shopping, and eating!

Here are the windmills on our way to Palm Springs:

Great day!!!

A Manzanita Branch…

I have always admired my neighbors manzanita branch that she has suspended over her counter in her beautiful kitchen.  Well, after Dear Daughter asked me to keep the Christmas Tree up all year to decorate it for all seasons, I had an idea.  I decided to get a branch, and decorate it.

Branch1Big manzanita branches are not easy to come by, so I improvised.  With the help of my friend Maria and her truck, we collected a big branch from an empty lot in town, and hauled it back home.

Branch2

I have no idea what kind of tree it is… DH was not too thrilled to have a tree branch in the house, so for the time being, it is “curing” in our back patio.

Branch3

Considering we live in a ’70s ranch, I will have to trim the branch to size and figure out a way to make it look nice in the house 🙂

The Noduitgang!

Recently, DH and I met up with some friends from way back when.  We all met at an international graduate program in Delft Netherlands.  It was probably one of the most memorable year in my life.  We hailed from Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, and the States.  I can’t believe how young we were back then! Though it only seems like yesterday.  One day, it would really be neat to have a reunion in Delft with everyone!

And I complain about my son; wearing sandals during winter in California – look at these guys, shorts during winter in Holland! 🙂

Official Start Of New Year!

Things have been so hectic around here to say the least.  I am finally ready to kick off the new year… Just to wrap up the season:

My younger two have had a tradition of making a ginger bread house.  With all their activities, they just managed to make it before younger son returned to college. This year, the “kit” got even easier I am told.  One day, I will challenge them by having them make it from scratch:

OfficialStart2013_1And here he is getting ready to head back.  He attends university by the beach, and for whatever reason wears sandals – even with sweaters! This, to the dismay of his younger sister’s fashion sensibilities.

OfficialStart2013_2And the movers have finally arrived this morning to take away the rest of oldest sons belongings.  Of course, what young upcoming professional can’t do without: huge flat screen TV, snowboard, ice hockey equipment, skydiving helmet, game console, sound system, exercising equipment, collection of beer glasses, and a hand me down vacuum cleaner from his parents 🙂 Also very efficient at putting his clothes in garden trash bags…

OfficialStart2013_3 OfficialStart2013_4Which just leaves me with our daughter, soon to graduate HS and suffering from a chronic case of senioritis (since her junior year).  And of course, our dogs: Happy and Grumpy – just kidding, Hiro and Koko.

OfficialStart2013_5And… I have no more excuses, time to put away the seasonal decorations and clean the house – yippie!!! 😉

Kid #1 Launched…

I knew this day would come. I think every parent anticipates this day with mixed emotions.  I am very sad but happy for him, at the same time.  Sad because I will miss seeing him on a regular basis, and happy that he is finally going to start his adult life…  My oldest son left the other day for a new “real” job which takes him to another State.  Hopefully, he will turn on his Skype now, and we will be able to video chat weekly… If you’re reading this, and you know who you are – turn on your Skype! 🙂

Thumpers?

I must admit, I am getting to the age where I will soon be joining the ranks of the AARP. This being said, I had never heard of a “Thumper” (except for that cute little bunny), until my recently graduated oldest son decided to have a go at making them.  What does one do after 4+ years of private university education and a BSEE ?…  You make an upcycled vintage suitcase boombox! 🙂 Here are the finished products; one for himself and his brother. And the  small  vintage train case will be made into a boombox for his younger sister – hopefully before she goes off to college.

The finished system is really quite amazing.  They just hook up their smartphones, and the sound is awesome! I can’t wait to see what older son will be able to accomplish after earning his Masters 😉

Glitterfest 2012!

My daughter and I finally made it to this years Glitterfest held in Santa Ana CA.  As art/craft shows go, I found it to be very unique.  There were a lot of amazing and creative artists represented.  It was sooo crowded, but I managed to take some photos:

My daughter fell in love with these crowns, tiaras, and headbands; I will have to have a go at making one sometime soon…

These vintage button rings were so cute!

And even better, Maria Grimes of Garden Path Beads was there.  When I started making lampwork beads, I came across many talented bead makers.  There are only a handful of bead artists that I admire, and Maria is one of them.  She is a skilled lampworker, and comes up with the most wonderful and unique ideas to incorporate into her designs.  Here is an adorable pig pendant I bought – “When Pigs Fly”:

Handmade Dress…

Well, I finally finished the dress for my daughter…  I have always considered myself a pretty competent seamstress, but I guess it had been quite a few years since I actually sewed an article of clothing.  The execution was good, but I was way off on the dress size.  I should have known better, my daughter wears a size 5/6, but after measuring her, I sewed a size 12 dress! Needless to say, it came out VERY big. My engineering mind told me to go with the numbers – numbers don’t lie.  But something went awfully wrong.  Not a total loss, I took the scraps and made my Blythe doll Blue, a skirt:

Good thing – My daughter and I went with a friend and her daughter to the LA Fashion District for a Prom dress, so we are covered :-).

An Outing to LA & LMU

We decided to go to LA and visit our older son in his new apartment.  Before that, we took a walk through his campus at Loyola Marymount University.  I think LMU has one of the prettiest campuses around.  Since it’s situated near the Marina, the air was cool and fresh:

Afterwards, we went to his apartment.  We met his very nice girlfriend :-), and went for lunch at a local Japanese restaurant.  A very nice day!

Happy Birthday “Deprived” Middle Child :-)

Well, the years keep passing faster and faster.  My younger son just celebrated his 19th birthday.  He will be a Sophomore in college and stands over a head taller than me – how fast they grow! I am beginning to sound like a broken record :-):

His usual joking line is ” well, I’m only the middle child”  – he is far from that! I was the youngest of four girls, and I would have loved to have had an older brother and a younger sister.  I think he does, though he will never admit it :-).  Oh, and I recently found this photo from his Mr. Alpha Chi – Not pageant, representing his ice hockey team (isn’t he cute!):

A Happy Anniversary

DH and I just celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary.  I have not even begun to start converting all the film photos to digital format, but I happened to have this scanned photo:

I have been playing with photoshop elements actions, textures, and overlays – so much fun! I used The Black Cat Photography Bokeh overlay on this photo.
