Zentangle Challenge #21 “Oof”

This week, Rick and Maria of Zentangle came up with a new tangle called “Oof“.  Since I have been thinking “garden & flowers” lately, I decided to incorporate a flower into this weeks challenge:

“Oof” was not that simple to draw – for me.  My initial diamonds were a bit misaligned, so the overall “Oof” is a bit off.  I’ll call mine “Goof”.  Otherwise, it was as usual, very fun to do :-).

Strawberries From My Garden

I planted two beds of strawberries in my garden last year.  They survived the winter, and actually spread.  I was probably supposed to thin them somewhere along the way…  oh well:

The strawberries even jumped the planter – I guess they are a bit invasive.  The berries are small but delicious!  Greek plain yogurt, pure maple syrup, and fresh picked strawberries from the garden – the best breakfast ever!

Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Have a wonderful day everyone! And Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there 🙂

This is part of  a 6′ posterboard Mother’s Day card that my children made for me last year.  My eldest son just finished finals and is home now for the summer.  My younger son came home for the weekend, he should finish in another month.  So, we are all assembled.   What more can a mother ask for :-).

A Visit To The Huntington Library

The other day, my friend Lorin and I met at The Huntington Library in San Marino.  It was a nice day, and they had an exhibition, “Revisiting The Regency” going on:

It was not a very large exhibit, but well worth seeing.

I visited The Huntington Library for the first time as a child, and remember fondly the two paintings, Pinkie by Thomas Lawrence, and The Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough.  Seeing them again was like seeing old friends.  I just love these paintings:

The Huntington is also known for their lovely gardens.  Unfortunately, the Japanese Garden was closed, but there were many other areas to enjoy:

They also have many wonderful sculptures gracing their grounds:

There is a lot to see and enjoy.  Although I was a bit pressed for time, it turned out to be a nice afternoon outing.

Bird A Week Challenge: Week 18/52

I wanted to make something special for my dear mother on Mother’s Day:

It’s a trinket box embellished with rhinestones, a vintage bird & floral decoupage.  The bird graphic is from Free Pretty Things For You.  I will make a small special something to go in the box :-).

Drawing Lab 2011: Scribble Drawings

This weeks assignment was kind of fun.  We were asked to draw a bunch of scribbles, look at them from different angles, and then find something in them:

It’s a dog! 🙂

Happy Boy’s Day!

May 5th is Boy’s Day in Japan, although it is now also called Children’s Day.  My  parents gave us a kabuto/warriors helmet to decorate for boys day, but along with all other things, it is lost in the deep beyond of our garage :-(.  I did however find the little warrior figurine and koi-nobori/carp:

My boys are still away at college – I will have to txt them well wishes for boy’s day :-).  If you would like to learn more about this celebration, go to Boy’s Day.

Digital Whisper 100 Themes Challenge #74 Window

I did not have a particular story in mind for this theme.  I really like the graphics of Rian Design, and wanted to use them:

Rian Design has some really neat graphics for sale as well as for free – it’s worth checking out.  Here are the credits:

Zentangle Challenge #20 Royal Wedding

This weeks theme was “Royal Wedding”:

And here is my inspiration, the Westminster Abbey:

May Garden 2011

There are a lot going on in my garden this month.  But the two standouts would be my first and only cherry on our Minnie Royal Cherry tree, and the return of the “volunteer” hollyhocks in my front garden:

The Minnie Royal is a new low chill sweet cherry compatible with our climate/region.  I did plant another cherry tree, the Royal Lee, but it did not fruit this year.  They are both planted in my back citrus grove.

I am really glad the hollyhocks came back this season.  In my excitement and haste, I harvested all the seeds to share with people.  But, fortunately, there were some seeds that managed to spread and grow.  Now if I could only find takers for all those seeds…

LA Phil & Beethoven’s 5th

DH is forever trying to instill his European “culture” on us.  Thus, we spent last night at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles enjoying the LA Philharmonics Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.  We have gone to many plays and concerts, but had shied away from classical music for a while.  The last time we attempted classical music, our eldest was a teenager, and very indignant that we had purchased tickets without consulting him.  He is now a Junior at University, and seems to have enjoyed himself this time around.  They do mature eventually.  It’s just a matter of surviving until then :-).
