What Have I Been Up To…

It’s already May.  Much has happened since I last posted.  Older son moved back to CA – yay! Younger son continues in the Bay Area, and dear daughter got hit by a car on her bike, but managed to make it to Nationals.  Thank God she is ok…

The inattentive gardener that I am, I dedicated two of my planters to growing berries.  I happened to be out poking around my garden today, and lo and behold, the berries were ripe!

I have been wanting my very own studio space.  When younger son moved up north, I eyed his room, but it was an overwhelming mess, since we started using it as a catch all room.  So, dear hubby suggested the kids bonus room.  He helped me organize it, put together some Ikea cabinets, and now I have my very own Studio! This is the old computer nook; now my sewing station:

Lots of storage for my quilting and art!

Vintage quilts I have been collecting for some special projects:

Now I have a place to display my vintage metal dollhouses:

My current quilt project.  A quilter, Laura West Kong, who belongs to my local Guild has a Quarter Daisy block in the book, Modern Blocks:

And the TV is still in here, so the kids are not totally deprived when they come home to visit:

I have always wanted to learn how to paint in acrylic.  A very talented friend of mine, Muriel Dolemieux is teaching a group of us in her home Studio.  I love it! it’s so much fun! Here is our first painting:

So, I’m keeping myself very busy.  Life is good!

Hemet Quilt Show & The Dammit Doll

I am still in the process of cleaning/organizing the kids old bonus room into somewhat of a studio/sewing room for myself.  It is a long process… Amazing how much fabric I have amassed in the last year and a half of quilting.  And equally amazing that the kids have “moved out” but still have most of their things in our house.  Anyway, I digress… I had a chance to go to the Hemet Annual Quilt Show.  I got a good dose of inspiration, and I can’t wait to finish organizing, so I can start to sew and create again.  Here are some of my favorites at the show (love the quilted dressmaker’s dummy):

I just love the silhouette black/white lady quilt.  And I wanted to share this doll that one of the ladies in my sewing group was making.  Cute idea, but I kind of feel sorry for the doll…

Happy Holidays!

It’s been a very busy last few weeks.  Dear older son has come and gone, dear younger son and dear daughter will be returning to the Bay area and University after the new year.  The quilts I made for them were a hit.  I had been collecting Japanese themed fabrics, and made them all the same quilt, with different sashings.  We also still keep up  the  tradition of “picture with Santa”.  A few years back, it became too difficult to organize going to the mall to take Santa photos, so I bought a Santa costume, and now, dear hubby dons the suit for our annual Santa photo.  It takes a few attempts to get the “almost” perfect shot as the kids are always goofing off.

And, Santa was very generous to me this year – I am now the proud owner of a Featherweight! I can even join the Featherweight club, haha.  And we also picked up dear daughters Elna Grasshopper from the shop – it runs beautifully now.  It belonged to her great grandmother Frederica.  She has named her Freddy :).

Happy New Year to you all!

Gift Quilts

I finished these quilts back in August, and can now share them since they have been given to their recipients.  I made the first quilt for my MIL, when we visited her in Europe.  I used a kit I found at our local quilt shop.  The second one, I made for my brother-in-law.  He likes Japanese things, and my friend Ellie had a quilt that was just perfect, and gave me the kimono panel, so I copied her quilt :). They both loved their quilts!

A Yoyo Quilt

I was visiting my parents today, and took photos of a yoyo quilt I had made for them years ago.  I must have been a teenager, since the gift was for their 25th wedding anniversary in the ’70s?  I don’t think they actually got the quilt until much later.  Looking back, I am amazed that I managed to make such a big yoyo quilt.  I guess I have always been a quilter without even thinking about it.

Cowboy Quilt Top

I started this quilt a year ago.  It was a pattern from one of the classes I took.  Since I didn’t like my fabric choice(too plain and boring), I decided to applique cowboys and horses that I found in the book Applique Quilt Revival. The cowboys and horses are raw edge applique that I blanket stitched onto the blocks.  It’s a bit time consuming, but I actually like hand applique and embroidery.  I also added the brown sashing and pinwheel cornerstones(remnants from the star blocks) to liven it up.  I’m planning on hand quilting it with a thick floss.   No hurries to finish, I’m thinking it will be for a future grandchild 🙂

Younger son is home for the moment, so I took advantage and had him hold up the quilt top 🙂

Quilts For Project Linus And The Master Chorale

I was asked to make a quilt for Project Linus.  A novelty fabric was supplied.  I chose to use my scraps to make a scrappy baby quilt – I really like scrappy quilts.  Most of the novelty fabric went on the back of the quilt.  I even used the different stitches on my machine (finally!) to quilt it all together.  You can see the different stitches on the photo – less than stellar, but stitched with the best intentions:

And a friend of mine belongs to our local Master Chorale.  They are doing some fundraising, so I made a Christmas quilt for their raffle.  I followed a tutorial by Missouri Star Company, and made it like this quilt I saw in blogland.  There are only nine blocks, but they are huge, so the quilt ended up being pretty big. I rented a longarm and quilted Christmas trees & stars all over ( some designs are very forgiving, like this one). And I appliqued a folk art angel on the back – so cute!

Sew Sisters Exchange Quilt Reveal!

This is the first year I participated in the Sew Sisters Quilt exchange, and it did not disappoint.  We gathered at a wonderful Spanish Cafe for a brunch followed by the exchange.  Lots of photos to share, so here I go:

If Donna’s quilt for Lynn looks familiar, it’s because I made one similar to it:

Here is my last focus fabric, “Vivienne” by Alexander Henry.  Can you see it in the beautiful quilt Dorre made for me? – Love my new quilt!

And Dani loved the quilt I made her too.  She has it hanging in her living room now 🙂

Sew Sisters Exchange Quilt

Last year when I started quilting, I was fortunate enough to be invited to join a quilt group, the Sew Sisters.  We meet regularly, and we also have an annual quilt exchange.  Each person picks a focal fabric, and someone else creates a quilt based on that fabric for them (this is all in secret).  I drew Dani, and these are the fabrics she had chosen, and I worked with:

Dani’s fabrics were beautiful, but posed a bit of a challenge for me as I tend toward brighter, pinky colors.  I chose to go the modern route, and this is the quilt I created for Dani.  The big “reveal” is today, I hope she likes her quilt…

My friend Ellie thought it needed a pop of color, so she generously gifted me the coral colored fabric. And thanks again to dear younger son for holding up the quilt – I knew these kids would come in handy one day :).

Oh, and I had enough fabric left, so I made Dani a matching giant pin cushion:

Quilts for Moi!

Finally, I have made quilts for myself! They still need binding, but I decided to enlist the help of dear hubby and younger son (before he takes off) to hold up the quilts.  The first one is a 30’s style, and the second one is a Kaffe Fasset.  They are both queen size, and therefore held sideways:

August Garden 2014 & Soy Amado

I have been neglecting my blog lately.  It has been sooo hot around here, all I want to do is lay flat on the cool floor and do nothing… but I have been keeping busy.  Starting off with my garden; venturing out into the unbearable heat, I am rewarded with a bumper crop of American concord grapes – so yummy!

On the quilting front, I stumbled onto a very nice quilt blog Little Island Quilting, where there is a wonderful project going on –  Soy Amado.  I am participating, and here are some of the blocks I made:

July Garden 2014 & Row By Row

This month, I am featuring my vegetable garden.  For the amount of care I give, I am always pleasantly surprised with the results:

And for Vickie, I did two rows; the second and fourth from the top – both are paper pieced.  Here are the links to the two rows:  Flying Geese and Tippecanoe.
